Brussels Breathes

A collection of positive images of Brussels

Brussels Breathes; images of the extraordinary ordinary

“Brussels Breathes” began as a project inspired by the fact that there were so few positive images of the city I found myself living in, a place that I initially didn't have the best impression of when I arrived in 2008 and yet came to love it. Furthermore it reflects my belief that the city is an organism; a living thing, and as such one can contribute to its health by one's own actions.

In 2010 I started by recording the city through video over 6 months, and made the film “Brussels Breathes”.  At this time there was not one single positive video about Brussels online. After simply sharing the video on my Facebook wall, it took flight, and was shown on television, featured in the press, and most importantly shared by many people with their friends and colleagues.  This was the proof that there was something missing in the depiction of the city, and inspired me to continue.

In 2013, after leaving my job in architecture to become a full-time photographer, musician and visual artist, I took 25 consecutives days to just walk through the city, capturing what I saw, collecting the best images and publishing these online. After taking thousands of photos, I was left with a collection that I felt began to better represent the city. I self-published 2,500 postcards of these images, as well as producing larger prints.

Today Brussels Breathes is a large collection of images and videos of a changing city, one that I feel merits a broader audience than I have managed to find on my own.
